Details

This project involves analyzing barriers to inclusivity and equity in theater education. The project addresses how the Actor's Pocket Guide platform can enhance culturally competent training, specifically focusing on reducing microaggressions and biases within the performing arts. For example:

  1. Equity in Curriculum: Collaborate with Actors Pocket Guide to identify gaps in educational materials, aiming to include modules that promote culturally inclusive theater education, ensuring diverse representation of playwrights, characters, and stories.
  2. Microaggressions in Theater: Research and provide recommendations on how the platform can foster an antiracist environment by addressing microaggressions experienced by BIPOC performers during auditions, rehearsals, and performances. This could involve adding resources for actors and directors on understanding implicit bias and promoting inclusive casting and rehearsal practices.
  3. Access to Resources: Develop strategies that ensure equitable access to resources, like educational workshops or mentorship, particularly for underrepresented groups in the performing arts.

Deliverables
  1. Comprehensive Report: A detailed analysis of the barriers to inclusivity and equity in theater education, focusing on how Actors Pocket Guide can address these issues within their platform. This report should include data, case studies, and research findings on racial inequity and bias in theater settings.
  2. Actionable Recommendations: A set of practical, step-by-step recommendations for integrating antiracist training, promoting cultural competency, and addressing microaggressions within Actors Pocket Guide’s resources and community features.
  3. Presentation: A clear and concise presentation summarizing the research findings and recommendations. This should be designed for Actors Pocket Guide stakeholders and team members, providing a roadmap for implementing the suggested interventions.
  4. (Optional) Pilot Workshop or Training Module: Development of a prototype workshop or training module based on the recommendations, which can be tested and refined for use on the Actors Pocket Guide platform. This module could serve as a model for future antiracism training sessions on the platform.

Actor's Pocket Guide, launched in 2018 by theater director Nicole and technology expert Anatole, is a powerful platform designed to streamline theater production while offering tools for learning and company management. Originally created to address organizational and communication challenges in theater, it now supports actors, producers, and arts educators with features like show creation, cast and crew coordination, sheet music sharing, and task assignments.

With the addition of a learning management system, the platform now offers educational modules focused on performing arts, inclusivity, and antiracism. This allows users to enhance their skills while promoting equity in theater. Actor's Pocket Guide will also eventually include a company management system that simplifies scheduling, financial tracking, and other business operations, helping arts organizations run smoothly from rehearsal to performance.

Nicole & Anatole continue to build a bridge between Broadway and theater communities worldwide, empowering users to create inclusive, well-organized productions that shine.
